What Planetside Next means to me

We all have our vices. For some gamers RPG's really do it for them. One of the things I've always loved about SOE is that we built our company on the core idea of making games across many genres, and that includes the world's first MMOFPS, Planetside.

I love Planetside. I really do. It's an amazing game. you won't find any other FPS where you can have a 100 vs. 100 battle raging. And we pulled this off 5-6 years ago.

There's a great description of a Planetside battle here:

I really couldn't sum it up any better than that. To me the idea of a massive firefight on that kind of scale is why I'm a gamer.

Planetside had a lot of really great things about it, but it also had some frustrating things. The whole Sanctuary concept is something that slowed things down too much. We also didn't get people back into the action quickly enough.

But the core of Planetside - massive battles with vehicles and infantry was something we nailed really well.

To me, Planetside Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better. Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE. With much better organization, and a tight focus on making sure the action is always going on, with awesome graphics.

Damn I love Planetside. I really do.

I played Planetside both expansions and spent a lot of time playing cowboys. If the opportunity arises for beta testing I would even go so far as to pay to beta test. I've played all 3 factions and as a 28 year old Disabled Us Army Veteran. I am your prime market age range and can say that I will have plenty of time to participate in the Beta of PS Next.
Hey smed. I'm really looking forward to PS2. I'm sure it has a significant amount of development left, so if you don't mind I'd like to make a couple of suggestions based on my experiences playing PS off and on throughout the years.

One thing I loved about PS were the cross faction outfit rivalries. Outfit pride was a great source of competition in Planetside's younger days. I hope you encourage this. A cool feature I'd like to see is the ability for specific outfits to unlock small but useful certifications, bonuses, or abilities based on skill based achievements or stat achievements. But it can't be game breaking such as giving outfits with a certain achievement a weapon. Just small bonuses such as "10% of vehicle timers." Also it would have to be done in such a way that massive outfits aren't given a larger advantage.

I'd also like to see tactical gameplay encouraged when possible to supplement the zerg play style.

But more importantly, the one thing PS does not have now is replayability. Of course you can always log in to a fun fight, but it's the same thing over and over. Try to cap bases, try to increase your teams ability to cap bases, or cripple the enemy. I'm at a loss on how to "fix" this issue. I personally don't mind it because the community kept me entertained, but I know many players became bored.

And one last personal request is for you maintain the fast mover playstyle that a minority of planetside players enjoyed. This would be the air cav players that moved quickly to either hot drop at a target or quickly destroy threats. For me air cav is the backbone of planetside, and I'd be bored without it. Don't listen to the noobs that got skeeter farmed too many times.

Best of luck with PS Next. Make sure you advertise it this time around. :)

Dropping out of a transport ship into battle. I have had few (if any) more memorable moments in my long gaming "career" - except for playing EQ with some of you and the team in EQ. ;) Very much looking forward to PS Next, Smed.

I am excited hear about Planetside Next. No game has presented anything near "massively" as Planetside did all those years ago!

I'd definitely consider subscribing for a long time if:

-Has high quality graphics (models/textures/effects) worthy of a console game Graphics mean the most to me!

-A more in-depth story
One that makes me want to discover the "Planetside World".

-Keeps the same level up, weapon/vehicle training and combat styles as before
With some improvements.

-A great ranking system, more statistics and a medal/achievement system which rivals that of any "Battlefield" game
A story isn't enough, I want to feel the competition to achieve greatness!

-Perhaps addons for weapons/vehicles
